That’s how long it took before I went camping for the first time. My first foray into sleeping in a temporary nylon home in the outdoors was both an experience I would have never expected and one that I will never forget. It was late April 2016 and I found myself in the Canadian Rockies for the first time also. That particular trip was full of many firsts and I’ll always look back on it fondly. It changed me forever.

I was on that trip with an old friend of mine and after a few days spent in Banff, we trekked up north to Jasper and were in complete awe the whole time we drove on the Icefields Parkway. Upon arriving in Jasper we hurriedly rushed to the Parks Canada office to get some recommendations for where to sleep that night! We both expected and wanted to hike into a backcountry site and it was soon decided that we would camp at Jacques Lake by Jasper’s Queen Elizabeth Range. I guess I always thought my first time camping would have been of a much different variety (i.e. car camping!). But I never would have imagined that my first time would have me lugging in all of my gear on my back while hiking more than 12 km to a pristine site nestled by an emerald-hued lake.

                <a

data-title="Beaver Lake. The physical toil aside, the beauty, the sense of adventure, the thrill, the element of risk and danger (avalanches and bears – it was late April), the companionship. Everything. It all came together perfectly to culminate in an amazing introduction to camping.

As I was a total camping newbie, there were many things I did not know or prepare adequately for. Remember, I had never camped before so all of this was new to me, but man, they were eating like kings and I so badly wished I had had something like that back then.

I subsisted that whole day and single night off of protein bars and trail mix mainly fueled from the whole pizza I had eaten in Jasper right before the hike in, which leads me to my next point…

Don’t eat a whole pizza right before embarking on a 3-hour backcountry hike.

At that point I was not yet vegan (it was actually two months before I’d make the change) and opted for cheese on my pizza and man, my stomach felt it and was not a happy camper.

Properly storing food away from wildlife

Fortunately, we did not learn this the hard way and it was a very smooth process! Jasper NP’s infrastructure in that particular backcountry site was not entirely primitive and was actually fantastic. They had a pulley system that enabled you to hang your food which saved us a lot of trouble. I guess it also helped that we did not even have that much food on us! It actually took me quite a long while to fully grasp how to properly set up the fly and vestibule.

The beauty:

The hike into the site was memorable. We passed a series of mirror-like emerald lakes that reflected the brilliant hues of the endless pines that painted the slopes around us. The lakes were all still as glass and served as the perfect foreground for the jagged peaks that towered high above them.

The old-growth forest. The forest that we were immersed in was OLD. How old? I’m not sure, but you just knew. The trees felt ancient and seemed as if they had been there and will continue to be there for many ages to come. It was a beautiful experience to have been amid such magnificent and massive trees.

Golden hour. Our 12 km + hike followed the valley bottom and was the furthest thing from the tree line. As such, we were well shaded for the whole hike. But as the sun broke through the distant clouds, magic hour came upon us and everything was soon painted in lush gold tones. It was a very welcomed sight and one that boosted morale, as we had been hiking for hours, the mosquitos were unrelenting, and my stomach was still not happy. Those sun-filled views also coincided with our stumbling upon a marker that we were just 1 km from our campsite.

Jacques Lake. Man, what a gem of a place. Given that we were in the Rockies in late April, most of the renowned lakes in Banff were still frozen, making their famous hues elusive during our 1-week stay. But Jacques Lake was thawed out. And while it may not have been turquoise like Lake Louise or as strikingly green as Emerald Lake, it was different, unique in its own way, and well, right in front of me. The most gorgeous snowcapped peaks encircled it, offering the most stunning terminating vistas. A rustic looking warden’s cabin hugged the lakeshore a short distance from me. I couldn’t believe I was in a place like this. That places like this even existed. But of course, they do! It just took me 23 years and a 12 km hike through thickets of old pines and mosquitos to see it for myself.

I found an old log by the shoreline that was perfectly and conveniently placed, sat down and just took it all in. Camp had been set up and the first show of the night was about to unfold: alpenglow on the Queen Elizabeth Range.

THE STARS. I could legitimately write a whole blog post on what I saw that night. I realize that sounds hyperbolic, but this night truly changed me and caused a profound shift within myself. We had no idea what the forecast overnight would look like, but given that the sun had peaked through the clouds and the twilight was clear, our chances of seeing a star-filled and clear night sky were good. I enthusiastically told my friend that I’d be waking up at 2 am to catch the night sky. She had asked me to wake her too. When 2 am finally came around, I tiredly but excitedly prepared to go out there. My friend opted to stay asleep, so I went out there alone. And man, I’ll never forget the sight. And not just the sight, but the whole sensory experience.

Even as I type these words, I can feel it all. The cold, numbing, but dewy air. The fresh and strong scent of pine and fir. The fear I felt as I heard rumblings from what I’d imagined was a large apex predator in the woods. And the sight of the stars, the millions of them above my head. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. There were seemingly more stars in the sky than there was black space. Though I was only out there for a few minutes and was anxious throughout most of it, I did have a fleeting moment where that fear subsided and all that remained was awe and wonder. And despite being out there for such a short period of time, it felt like I had been out there for hours. Inevitably, however, my neck began to hurt from having it craned for so long towards the stars. And as such, I eventually retreated back into the relative “safety” of my nylon house and went back to sleep wondering if it had all been a dream.

On that night I had no photographic equipment (let alone working knowledge of astrophotography and the stars) that would have enabled me to capture the night sky and the sights that I saw, which had slightly disappointed me, but it was for the best. I got to experience everything that night without obsessing over capturing images and looking through a viewfinder! This experience was actually a significant reason why I began to invest in better camera equipment and teach myself how to shoot manually and how to shoot astro. Recalling the memories from this night and some other travels in 2016, I can wholeheartedly state that it inspired me to capture and create images like the ones below.

Also, don’t get me wrong, astrophotography is probably my favourite type of shooting, but I don’t ever want it to compromise my experience or be the sole reason that I’m out there watching the night sky. I’d like to think that’s never been the case, but as always it does require balance, especially on those nights where the conditions are perfect and the stars literally align.
